SORNA UNIT

Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act

It is the mission of the Muscogee Nation Lighthorse Tribal Police SORNA Unit to protect the citizens of The Great Muscogee Nation, as well as the citizens of the communities within our tribal jurisdictional boundaries, by registering, monitoring, and tracking sex offenders.

We will meet the challenge of fulfilling our mission by providing community awareness of all sex offenders within the Muscogee Nation Reservation, ensuring that all sex offenders are in compliance with MCN and Federal code, and maintaining sex offenders information and files.

OUR HISTORY

In 2006, Congress passed the Adam Walsh Child Protecting Act. This act gave guidelines for SORNA (Sex Offender Registry Notification Act) and how to implement the program to local, state, and tribal law enforcement agencies.

In 2020, the McGirt ruling reeestablished the historical tribal boundaries of the Muscogee Nation Reservation. The tribe has always maintained a SORNA program, and with the McGirt ruling, it gives the Nation expanded jurisdicaiton over all sex offenders within the Reservation boundaries. The Lighthorse Tribal Police Department has and will continue to register and monitor offenders within our boundaries according to Federal law. The law states that any offender (Native or Non-Native) that resides, works, goes to school or visits within the boundaries MUST register with the Lighthorse Tribal Police SORNA Unit.
